Many people all over the world struggle with emotional and mental health issues that can have a direct affect on their daily functioning. And in many cases, therapy and treatment with medications are recommended to help address these concerns. However, an increasing number of individuals are seeking comfort, healing, and support from an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) to help improve their mental health well-being. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are "prescribed" by a Licensed Mental Health Professional to help comfort people experiencing some level of distress or unpleasant symptoms from mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, PTSD, OCD, and others. Particularly, for individuals who may not be allowed to have their pet in their apartments, rental units, or college dorm, or who are required to pay a large fee for keeping their pet on the premises. ESA letters may allow these fees to be waived or decreased and for people to keep their comforting support animal in places that they may not usually be permitted such as stores and other public places.
Emotional Support Animals (ESAs), Service Animals, and Therapy Dogs are not the same. ESAs can be any animal or pet that can provide emotional and therapeutic benefit to those suffering with emotional and mental health conditions or disabilities. ESA's are protected by Federal Law, the Fair Housing Act and do not have to be trained in order to become an emotional support animal.
Service animals (which are usually dogs) are trained and qualified to provide services to people with a medical alert, seizure disorder, PTSD, and someone needing to be pulled in their wheelchair. Service animals can also be beneficial for individuals with autistic spectrum disorder, and can even alert those who are affected by environmental allergies. Federal Law and the American Disability Act makes provision for service animals to have full access to all public places.
Therapy Dogs are also beneficial to individuals that are injured or suffering. These dogs are specifically trained to provide comfort and show affection to individuals in nursing homes, rehab facilities, hospitals and even some schools. Therapy dogs do not have the same protected access rights that are afforded to ESAs and Service Animals.
At PYOU'RE Life Behavioral Health and Wellness, LLC, we desire to help individuals who are experiencing decreased social, occupational, and academic functioning due to the symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and mood instability. In addition to virtual psychiatric evaluations and medication management visits, we also offer virtual consultations/evaluations to determine if you or your loved one would significantly benefit from having an Emotional Support Animal Letter due to housing restrictions in places such as apartments, rental units, and college dorms. In approving ESA letters, we follow specific protocols to ensure the necessity of the letter while providing hope for those who are being negatively impacted by the symptoms of mental health conditions. Our guidelines help to prevent fraud and misuse of ESA letters while offering a service that can benefit those who legitimately need the comfort and support of their emotional support animal in places and areas where animals may not be permitted. Additionally, we only write prescription letters for ESAs. Therefore, we DO NOT write letters for Services Animals (Dogs) or Therapy Dogs, as these animals require specific training that we cannot guarantee. ESA Letters last for 1 year and must be renewed each year that an individual is suffering with symptoms of a mental health condition.
